"Developed country" the missing part of puzzle

[From wikipedia, April-29,2012]
developed country can be defined through economic growth and security. Most commonly the criteria for evaluating the degree of development is to look at gross domestic product (GDP), the per capita income, level of industrialization, amount of widespread infrastructure and general standard of living.[1]"

Yes, per capita income is surely a good criteria for measuring certain aspects of society.
"Jahan sumati, tahan sampaty nana,
jahan kumati tahan vipati nidhana" - Saint Kabeerdas
Where there is goodwill wealth is multifold,
where there is ill-will, problems are multifold.

But is this wealth as simply translatable to GDP for making index. Isn't something missing in this index.
If a person is very simple and doesn't need much, is honest and loving. I he not developed 'enough'.

But the clarity came when I read through "Living with the Himalayan Masters" by Swami Rama.
p18, "In the villages high in the mountains, no one even locks his house- locks are not needed. There are places of pilgrimage there. If you go to a shrine high in the mountains and drop your purse on the path, it will still be there when you come back weeks later. No one will touch it. They consider it disrespectful to touch somebody else's things without permission. "Why should we need someone else's things?" they will ask. There is no greed, for their needs are few. They do not suffer from materialistic insanity."

"The people don't know how to hate anyone."

"Modern society is considered to be advanced and cultured, but it is not genuine. It is cultured like a cultured pearl. Few value genuine pearls today. The modern human being has weakened himself and his human nature by culturing it again and again, loosing touch with nature and reality. In modern culture we live for showing off to others, not for serving others. But if you go to the mountains, not matter who you are the first things they will ask you are, "Have you taken your food? Do you have a place to stay?" Anybody there will ask you these things, whether you are friend or stranger."

If you read further, two things will surely come to your mind, as they did to me:
- number of crimes reported in police stations and cases registered in courts/trials
- number of hospital visits per year and severity of cases

Without adding these two criterion, this index will keep misleading people in their decisions and governments in making policies.
